What Would Happen If Something Happened to You Tomorrow? A Real Talk on Readiness

This question is often avoided—not because people are careless, but because it feels heavy, uncomfortable, or easy to put off.

For example, if you weren’t able to speak for yourself tomorrow, someone else would have to. They would have to interpret your preferences. Decide what’s most important. Figure out how you usually handle things—and do their best to step in your place.

That’s a heavy responsibility, especially without guidance.

Most people don’t think about readiness in these terms. We imagine information as something we’ll explain when the time comes. But when the time comes suddenly, explanation isn’t what you want to meet it with—preparation is.

Without clear information, loved ones are left making judgment calls. They guess. They hesitate. They carry the weight of wondering whether they’re doing the right thing.

Readiness is what turns responsibility into confidence. It gives others permission to act instead of second-guessing themselves. This isn’t about having every detail finalized. It’s about offering a starting point—something solid to work from when emotions are high and time is limited.

When information is written down and accessible, it becomes guidance. When it isn’t, even simple decisions can feel overwhelming.

Preparation is a form of consideration. It’s how you continue to show care, even when you’re not the one in the room.
